Prokash Karmakar was born in Kolkata in the 1930s. His father was a well-known and respected artist so some of his artistic sensibilities were already there. To hone his skills, he studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata, but however had to drop out as both his parents unfortunately passed away.

He joined then quit the army he’d been with for 2 years and was subsequently employed as a graphic designer by a local medical company. Out of desperation for money and a the desire to break into the art world, Prokash came upon an ingenious idea, a revolutionary one – and that was to hold a street exhibition of his works. This was the first of its kind in Kolkata. He continued to hold several more street exhibitions. This ultimately threw him into the limelight.

Not only did he go on to receive a scholarship to study in France, but he also received awards from the Lalit Kala Akademi, the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, and Rabindra Bharati University.

He has held several exhibitions of his work in India and abroad. Collections of his work can also be found in places such as the Tata Institute of Art, the Lalit Kala Academy and the Modern Art Gallery in New Delhi.

Karmarkar resides and works in Kolkata.
