Sometimes, it’s easier to stick to the work that you’re known and admired for than to constantly redefine yourself past your (and other people’s) comfort zone(s).

Anjolie Ela Menon chooses the latter, constantly re-defining the role she plays as an artist, refusing to be categorised. The body of work she has produced over the life of her career bears testament to that.

Born in West Bengal in 1940, Anjolie Ela had already started selling some of her paintings by the time she was 15 - over 40 of her pieces, in fact.

In her late teens, as well as having a deep interest in pieces created by M F Husain, Amrita Shergil and Modigliani AND holding a solo exhibition of 53 pieces of her work, Anjolie Ela’s amazing talent also landed her an art scholarship to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She used that opportunity to also travel through large parts of Europe and West Asia, drinking in Romanesque and Byzantine art.

Since then, and with over 30 solos to date, Anjolie Ela has worked extensively in India, Japan, USA and Europe. Private and corporate collections of her work abound and can also be found in prominent museums in India and beyond.

In 2000, she was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri by the Indian Government.
